Yes that’s right, I think we are all done with our required paperwork to live/work in Korea. Katy got an E-2 visa, and I got a F-3 visa. It was pretty easy and straight forward to get them, we were just waiting on Katy’s contract from Epik so she could get her E-2 visa. We were really stressing out because Epik made it real clear to not show up to orientation on the 19th without a visa. The Korean Consulate in Chicago is pretty speedy about things, especially since we walked the paperwork in and picked it up in person. We really didn’t have any time for hiccups. Once we get to Korea, I will have to change my visa to an F-2 status, or a Dependents visa so that I can work. I think Katy has to register with the Vaccination office and then I can get my visa status changed. I have also been looking into getting a Korean Ham Radio License, I just have to remember to bring my US Amateur Radio License with me. Anyway, time to hang out with some friends…..only 4 days left! Cheers!

Well, we got our contract Sunday evening and made a trip out to Chicago to visit the Korean Consulate on Monday. It turned out that the contract was waiting at our old address since the middle of last week. We were extremely stressed about it, and called our Epik Coordinator and he looked up the tracking and we figured out what had happened. We are expected to pick up our visas on Thursday. Today we got a phone call from a lady that is processing the visas and she mentioned that we had in fact not given her the right papers. She needed the sealed noticed of appointment and not the actual contract. It was their screw up so she said as long as we brought it on Thursday they could still process the visas. We are still leaving at our scheduled time next Wednesday, so all is good. Today, we went shopping for things we will be needing. We are getting more excited about leaving. Things are good

Cory and I wanted to make one last trip out to Pittsburgh to see my sister and brother-in-law before leaving, and as we were planning it out, Emily and I decided we wanted to go to the Inauguration. We knew it would be a huge pain the rear, but we couldn’t let such a historic moment pass us by without being a part of it. Late Friday night, mom decided she wanted to be part of the magic too, which worked out well because it was just Emily and I going and our husbands would have our cars, leaving us with no way to get to D.C. Trains were books solid, so there was no chance we could have used public transport.

Cory went home on Sunday afternoon because he had to work on Monday. Mom showed up in Pittsburgh that evening with bags full of hand warmers, trail mix, luna bars, matching hats, etc.– everything we would need for surviving the cold weather and long wait. Emily had arranged for us to stay at a friend’s place in downtown Arlington, but we didn’t know how far away we’d have to park our car, so we each packed 1 small bag with everything we’d need for the next couple of days to make our journey a little easier. This involved wearing some of the same clothes for 3 days straight. I felt so stinky when it was all over.

After driving through heavy snow to get to Arlington, we got lost at the tail end of our trip. On a side note, we had to turn the car around in the parking lot of the Freddie Mac building and it’s still standing! We eventually made it to the apartment and it was about 4 in the morning before we could lay our pretty heads down on a pillow and go to sleep.

On Monday, we headed down to the mall check out the scene. Because crowds at been projected at around 2 million for the inauguration, we didn’t even bother with public transportation, but the 3 1/2 mile walk only took about an hour. On our way we walked past the Marines memorial and through the Arlington cemetary, where we took a side trek to see JFK’s tomb. There were people crowded around it, but for the number of people there, it was eerily quiet and respectful.
After we had our fill of dead people, we crossed the Arlington Memorial Bridge and head toward the Lincoln Memorial. Security was tight and even though it was the day before the Inauguration, the place was packed. The scaffolding from Sunday night’s concert was still up around the Lincoln Memorial, so the only access to it was from the side and there was a line to go see it. We spent the rest of our time just checking out the area and buying some swag and hot dogs on Constitution Ave. before getting back to the apartment for a good night’s rest.

We woke up at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning and layered on the warm clothes. We had bought a reusable bag with a picture of Obama on it the day before, so we shoved all our stuff down into it and were out the door by 6. Walking to the mall was interesting because the city was dead except for other people bundled up in warm clothes walking in the same direction as us. Mom kept comparing us to the zombies in “Night of the Living Dead”. On our way there, we walked across the the Arlington Memorial Bridge again, but this time the three of us were interviewed by the NPR reporter Allison Aubry. A co-worker of mine said she heard us on Morning Edition, but it was live so the clip wasn’t archived.

After crossing the bridge, we walked over to the reflecting pool and noticed people sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, so we went up and joined them. In retrospect, we probably would have seen how far into the mall we could have gotten so we could have at least seen the Capitol building during Obama’s inauguration, but we thought being on the Lincoln Memorial was a symbolic place to spend the day, despite the Washington Memorial blocking our view. Plus, we got to sit. The mood on the steps was so jubilant and the loudspeakers were playing Sunday night’s concert, so everybody was singing and dancing. One guy in particular got in front of everybody and tried to lead us all and did goofy dances to entertain us.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t see a jumbotron from where we were sitting, so once the official festivities began, we moved to where we could see what was going on.

Watching Obama take the Oath of Office and Aretha sing was so emotional and joyous for everybody around us. Tears welled in my eyes several times. As soon as President Barack Obama’s speech was over, we got the heck out of dodge. We speedwalked back to our car, which we had already packed up that morning, and we drove away.

Well, technically less than 2 weeks left until we leave. This past month has been pretty busy. We had what seems like a ton of issues with our paperwork. Apparently getting something Apostilled means sending it down to state and getting the secretary of Indiana to put a special stamp on it and look up the validity of the notary that signed it. Anyway, we BARELY made it into the list to be placed in Pusan. We bought our plane tickets just before prices shot up sky high. I had been watching plane tickets prices for a few weeks through www.farecompare.com to see if they would start increasing. They day I bought the tickets I saw that they were beginning to increase. It was a little risky buying the tickets when we did, about 1 month prior to us leaving. The only crappy part of our trip is that we have 2 stops before we leave the country. Well, I quit my job helping Katy’s dad last Saturday. Just before leaving I updated the website and made it easy to manage the inventory. This is mine and Katy’s last week at work. Only two more days of work and I’m going to miss it. I have been working for a year and a half at two jobs. It’s wierd to leave one job and just come straight home. It’s going to be even stranger in South Korea and not having a job as soon as we get there. Katy will be working, but I’m going to try and find a job doing something with computers. I have contacted a guy in Seoul and I’m waiting to hear back from him. I’m also trying to work something out with Tire Rack, but it’s not looking very promising. Katy and I will be spending the week and a half that we have off getting things tied up here. We still have to take a trip to Chicago, take stuff to our storage unit, and pack, plus much more. I have a grocery list of things that we have to get done. Well, I’m looking forward to spending time with family and friends with our time off. I haven’t done much of that lately. It will be nice.

Today we are officially moved out of our house. Last night we left a few things in the garage but had the house all cleaned up and empty. We went back today, and cleaned the garage out and moved it to our storage unit. Our 8×15 storage unit is pretty full right now, but I’m sure more room could be made if we were a little more efficient with space. We did leave our sweet 2 wheeled wheel barrow, gas grill, mini fridge, and some things in the house. With all the drives too and from the storage unit, we have noticed that we have been spending a lot of time thinking about Mozart. We both miss him so much, and would give anything in the world to have him back. Tomorrow I will be waking up early so that I can drop off our blue vase that we will be keeping his ashes in at the animal clinic. We have been looking for a suitable plug for the vase, and found a few things that will work. I am looking forward to getting his ashes back, and getting some closure on this.

Well, not exactly we have a few things to pick up at the house still. But it’s just a few things in the garage. I have noticed that it gets a little easier every day missing Mozart. It’s something that has finally hit me as a reality the past couple days. When we would leave the house and come back it would suck because Mozart wasn’t there to greet us. We both still miss him dearly, and he will remain in our hearts as “The sweetest bastard that ever lived”. Friday, Katy and I both went to pay the cremation bill. We are getting it done at the Roseland Animal Clinic in South Bend, which Oz’s wife Anne works at. The total cost is like $95 for the cremation and $70 for the ugly plastic urn they give you. Katy found a beautiful blue vase at a pottery shop, which only cost $50, that we will be using instead. Today, Brian came over and helped me caulk the bath tub, and put the knobs on the new cabinet that we recently had built for us in the dining room. I hooked up the baseboard heater in the kitchen, which was a bit tricky, but I got it done. Katy cleaned up the rest of the house and we moved everything out of it. It’s kinda sad to think that we won’t be living in the house for over a year. We put a lot of blood and sweat into the house, and we can’t enjoy it anymore. It’s crazy that everything is happening so fast. Last night we hung out at Devin’s house and had our Thanksgiving dinner with our family. Katy and I ended up spending the night there. Oh speaking of which, I found my wedding ring!! I lost it like 2 weeks ago, and was hoping that it would turn up some time. Well it never did, and last night I called Rick to see if he could bring his metal detectors over. He did, and I found my ring buried in the soft ground in front of our back deck. I would have never found it, if it hadn’t been for the metal detectors. I’m pretty happy about that. Well, right now I’m sitting in our new bed at Eva’s. I hope it won’t be too hard adjusting to living in someone else’s house. I sure am going to miss ours. Cheers everyone! Time for bed.

These last 4 days have been an emotional roller coaster for us, and is a week that is burned into our memories. This weekend Emily and Ian came to town and brought their two other family members with them, Gus and Illias. Well Saturday night, Cory let all the dogs out– there were four at our house– and Gus ran away. We spent 2 hours looking for him to no avail, and with Gus being a miniature pincher, we weren’t very confident that he would make it through the night. Saturday night the temperature dipped into the lower teens, and on Sunday, we printed out 300 colored flyers and handed them out in Pheasant Ridge with Emily and Ian. Emily and Ian had to leave for their home in Pittsburgh Sunday night, but we were determined to find him. Katy put a post on Craigslist for Gus, and a couple hours later we got a call from a gentleman in Michigan that said he saw a min-pin crossing SR12 in Michigan just north of our house about 7 miles.

We then put an ad in the Elkhart Truth for Gus and waited. Monday came and went, and Eva ended up taking Tuesday off to go look for the pup. Eva began the day handing out fliers around the area, and headed into Michigan. While Cory was at work he got a phone call from a women who works for the Zion Lutheran Church, which is just down the road. She said she spotted Gus in the area, so I promptly called Eva who then scoped out the area. Gus was there and was so afraid that she had to coerce him with lots of ham to get him to come to her. GUS WAS SAVED! We are all so happy that Gus is back with us! But the story doesn’t end there. Gus spent Tuesday night at our house and got along with Mozart pretty well. They both were battling for the attention, while we were home. Well, today Emily and Ian were on their way to our house after work to pick him up and take him home. Cory was in the garage getting stuff ready to pack up, and had just come in and sat down to eat some pizza. There was a knock on the door and under the porch light, Cory could see a women with a concerned look on her face. He answered the door and she said “I think I just might have hit your dog.” Cory asked, “Is he black and white?” She replied “yes” and Katy bolted out the door before I had a chance to put my shoes on. Through the vehicle lights I could see Katy running towards a body lying in the road that looked like Mozart. I ran as fast as I could to the motionless body, kneeling beside him see if he had a response. I could hear the lady in the background saying how sorry she was, but I didn’t care. She had killed our dog. Tonight has been a difficult night for us both. We have shed more tears tonight, than ever. I can’t remember the last time I really cried like this. It hurts so much, and we will miss him.

Yup, that’s right we have 13 days left to go in our house, and I’m sure it’s going to be hectic. We have some things already moved into our storage unit, but we still have a lot more to do. Our renters are coming over Thursday evening to let us know what they want us to leave in the house, and what they won’t be wanting. Tonight, I got home and noticed that Katy has a flat on her passenger side front. So, I pulled it into the garage and realized we didn’t have a jack in her truck. Since we don’t own a floor jack, I had to make some phone calls and luckily Uncle Rick who lives just down the road had one. I changed the front tire and replaced it with a space saver spare. I noticed the space saver spare was low, and decided we should take it down the road to the gas station even though it’s snowing like hell. Well, pulling it out of the garage and I noticed the truck now had 2 flats not including the one I just took off. So now we have THREE flat tires, two of which are on the truck. So we decided that tomorrow we will wake up super early and drive to work in the same vehicle. Luckily, I work at The Tire Rack so I can get the flats fixed while I’m at work, but I will still have to pick Katy up on the way home and install them tomorrow night after working at the car lot. Oh what a fun day I’m looking forward too Well, I’m off to bed. Must wake up in 6 hours. Cheers!

We are guessing that we have four weeks left in our house. This week was pretty productive and flew by quickly. We hired out some work on the house that we didn’t have the tools to do. Cory ripped out the cabinet in the basement stairwell to do some electrical work for the bathroom. We had the cabinet fixed and shortened in depth, and had the stairwell drywalled. Cory sanded it down today and helped Katy paint the drywall. Also, Katy interviewed with Eric Martin (Epik coordinator in Korea) this past week and passed with flying colors. Cory finished his Epik application and submitted it Friday evening and should be hearing back sometime this week. Things are going pretty well, but there is still more to get done.

Well today we got a lot of stuff done around the house. Cory went to work this morning and Katy stayed home to do some drywall patching and some cleaning up around the house. Cory then went to lowes to pick some plumbing supplies up and came to to be hard at work getting the bathroom all done. Cory got the bathroom vanity all installed and plumbed and everything is working beautifully. It’s kinda sad that we are doing all this work to the house only to leave it in a month or so. This is stuff that we have been putting off doing but now that we have a hard deadline to meet we are busting our butts to make it happen. We threw out all the old cabinets that were in the bathroom and ended up eating dinner next to the burning timber. Katy made a beautiful dinner of coconut shrimp and fried bananas with some rice. It was very tasty! The house is pretty much all clean for our new renters to be looking at tomorrow afternoon. We do have some odd ends to do still, Cory has to mow the lawn and buy some outlet covers, and Katy has to finish her drywall stuff up. But it should be ready for them tomorrow. Another week down, and only 6 more to go.
