Well, last Sunday I sold my old Daelim VS125. She was a good bike, and will be missed. The longest trip we did was to Goeje island about 5 weeks on my Birthday. It was a good but chilly trip. It was shortly after that trip that I had come to the conclusion that the 125cc was not a good candidate for touring Korea. It’s really good for city driving, but for open roads and hills it’s a little doggy, especially with 2 people. So, when Katy suggested that I ask about a 250cc cruiser in the classifieds, I jumped at the idea. Her only requirement was that it have a backrest and storage compartment. I knew that I had seen sport bikes with storage containers and backrests, so I began shopping around. I found the bike I wanted. A 2005 Hyosung Comet GT250, which is a Naked 250cc V-twin.
I have always been partial to V-twins because of their torque and the beautiful sound they make. Even with the stock exhaust, the Comet sounds harmonious. Comparing these two bikes is like night and day. The Daelim is really a cheap reliable bike which is mainly used as a delivery courier here in Korea. Daelim had partnered with Honda in the past and had borrowed much of their technology. So their engines and transmissions are bullet proof. My new Hyosung is also a cheap bike, but of a much higher quality than the VS125. The ride quality is light years smoother and the over all riding experience is much better. My only gripe is that the Comet is a bit on the heavy side. The VS125 is only 286lbs where as the Comet is a hefty 370lbs. The SV650 which is over twice the engine size of the Comet is only 375lbs. Although the Comet looks like a larger displacement motorcycle than what it is, I think the large contributor of the extra weight is the steel frame. I don’t think one bit of the bike is aluminum from what I can tell. But enough of comparing bikes. I’m just excited to go on a road trip with her now!
